Liverpool Football League: The Pride Of Merseyside

Based in Liverpool, Merseyside is a football league known as the Liverpool Football Club founded in 1892 and in 1893 joined the Footbal League. It is also known to be second most successful club in the history of English football.Eighteen League titles, seven FA Cups and a record seven League Cups were won by the football club’s members making them wear their Liverpool shirts proudly. They are also famous to be the most successful English club, as they wear Premier League shirts in European competition for winning five European Cups, three UEFA Cups and three UEFA Super Cups.

Liverpool FC fans were involed involved in two tragedies in 1985,namely: (1) Hillsborough disaster, 96 Liverpool supporters lost their lives in a crush against perimeter fencing in 1989; and (2) Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985, in which charging Liverpool fans caused a wall to collapse, killing 39 Juventus supporters .

The dispute between the Everton Football Club committee and John Houlding, club president and owner of the land at Anfield resulted to the foundation of Liverpool football club.John Houlding founded Liverpool FC to play at Anfield after eight years.

Red have been the home colour of their Liverppol’s Football shirts, but when it was founded, the club’s kit was more likely to a contemporary Everton kit. It has gained popularity among fans of other clubs around the world.In memory of former manager Bill Shankly, the song’s title that adorns the top of the Shankley Gates was unveiled on August 2, 1982. The You’ll Never Walk Alone portion of the Shankly Gates is also reproduced on the club’s crest.

Liverpool is often featured and has appeared in a number of media programs. The club appeared in the first edition of the BBC’s Match of the Day, which screened highlights of its match against Arsenal at Anfield.Broadcasted live in 1967 was the match between Liverpool and West Ham United, the first football match televised in colour.

Why The Long Term Solution At Chelsea Is Not Roman’s Donations.

Chelsea may have an outstanding recent domestic win ratio, a squad packed with great players who can play open attacking soccer and be one of the richest clubs in world soccer, but the owner Roman Abramovich has one major problem to resolve. The main issue facing the Chelsea owner is that despite his personal millions and his willingness to spend it at the club, every season Chelsea finish it is likely to see a balance sheet in the red.

A club may be able to make a decent amount of money from club and kit advertisement deals, the sale of soccer merchandise, the sale of players and prize money won, if they are good enough, but for Chelsea the enormous costs of maintaining their squad is still a big drain on resources. With UEFA adopting strict new rules for 2012, meaning that all participating teams in their competitions must be running within strict financial rules, Chelsea needs to find a way to increase their earnings while remaining in European soccer’s elite.

Addressing this thorny issue began last summer when a few first team players were allowed to change clubs. Michael Ballack left for Leverkusen, Deco and Juliano Belletti joined Fluminense, Joe Cole moved North to Liverpool and Ricardo Carvalho rejoined former manager Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid. Even this trimming of the playing squad and a higher reliance on younger players has not been completely effective in reversing the club’s constant tumble into debt.

The initial level of spending made by owner Abramovich was aimed at helping Chelsea fast-track to becoming the biggest club not only in English soccer, but also European and world soccer. Currently either Real Madrid, Manchester United or Barcelona enjoy the status of the worlds ‘biggest’ club, depending on the criteria used for the title and there are two key reasons why Chelsea, despite Abramovich’s large expenditure and a policy for paying huge wages, have been unable to match the standards set by the existing soccer giants: The seat capacity of Stamford Bridge and the income the stadium generates and the clubs worldwide apparel in terms of merchandising.

Addressing the issue with the size and revenue generating capabilities of Stamford Bridge is something which Roman Abramovich may consider reviewing sooner, rather than later. Stamford Bridge may, if the whispers are true, soon be part of Chelsea’s decorated past, rather than their future. While no specific details have been confirmed by any sources at the club, rumours are circulating that Mr Abramovich is considering moving the club into a purpose built new stadium, of at least 60,000 capacity, and such a move is required if Chelsea are to realistically hope to claim the title of the world’s biggest club.

The proposed new stadium and its larger capacity will have a positive, instantaneous effect on resolving Chelsea’s financial situation. The added revenue from the bigger ground would, provided the club can fill the larger stadium, provide considerably more income for the club at each home game. The increased revenue from a new ground will be incredibly beneficial in helping the club follow the new guidelines UEFA wants imposed in time for the beginning of the 2012 season. Another plus financially is that Chelsea could choose to sell their stadium naming rights to the highest paying sponsor, as neighbours Arsenal did with their new Emirates stadium.

Building a new ground could also improve the clubs ability to increase sales in merchandising as the added exposure would see the club achieve saturation in markets such as the Far East and the Americas.

The long term future of Chelsea relies on the owner investing his time and money not just in players, but in the very foundations of the club. If Chelsea truly desire ambitions to overtake the others and become the world’s biggest soccer team, then developing their Stamford Bridge ground is the first and most important step they need to take in order to achieve that.

Chelsea’s squad is so packed with talent you may claim it’s hard to find the players that make the team work. Without these players Chelsea just wouldn’t be on the same level.

1. JOHN TERRY (England, Central defender)

Terry is captain of club and country and he sets the benchmark which the other Chelsea players adhere to. Willing to defend by any means necessary with skill and bravery, he has incredible skill and a technically sound style. Not afraid to lead by example and always managers to be a danger for teams set pieces, you could not find a better player to captain your club and country.

He may not be the most popular player amongst Arsenal fans, but despite their bile, Ashley Cole is still, arguably, the best left back in world soccer. At times he may struggle for confidence and form, his quality balls into the box after breakaways down the left side can only be matched by his nack of stopping the worlds best players in their tracks. noone else managers to keep players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo quite during games. That’s no fluke, only a world class left back can pull it off.

3. MIKAEL ESSIEN (Ghana, Central midfielder)

Last seasons injury made all Chelsea fans realise how important a role Mikael Essien played,even in a team filled with a world class midfield. Essien helps balance the midfield. With first class defensive skill and a high work rate not to mention a great intelligence for the game. With a powerful shot from a distance and the ability to go forward at the right time making him an asset to the team. The 24.4 million pounds Chelsea paid to land the midfielder from Lyon in the summer of 2005 looks to be a bargain at today’s prices.

4. FRANK LAMPARD (England, Central Midfielder)

What’s a team without a midfielder who can score plenty of goals? Lampard is one of the best around. He has started scoring goals again this season due to Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to give him a slightly deeper role in the team. Frank Lampard is a vital source of attacking strength due to his accurate shooting and ability to link play with his strikers.

5. DIDIER DROGBA (Ivory Coast, Attacker)

Considered by many to be the best striker in the world at the moment, and its hard to argue the point considering his current form. Didier Drogba wearing the latest Chelsea soccer jersey makes all defenders fear the upcoming game. He may be known for his ability to fall over during tackles and arguing with officials and opposing players but no goalkeeper wants him with the ball when he’s playing well. An excellent sense of presence coupled with prestigious goal scoring skill make him a must have for the team. His form is vital for Chelsea if they are to end Manchester United’s dominance of the Premier league.
